When I got my first air-fare, I was ecstatic.
My parents took me to the airport to pick me up at the airport and I was so excited to be on the ground, and then they said, “Oh, my God, you’re going to be the pilot.”
And I was like, “Wait, you got me a job?
Are you serious?”
They were so excited, and I would be like, [sighs] Oh my God.
And I got a job and I started flying and I loved it.
And now I’m a pilot, and my kids love me and I get to travel all over the world, and it’s really cool.
I’ve got this little bit of hope that I can do something to help people out.
And it’s kind of fun because, as far as my kids, I have a job that they can follow.
I don’t have to worry about the weather or anything like that.
[laughs] I get the occasional phone call from them, but I try not to be too concerned.
It’s kind to see them so excited and happy about flying.
And my mom’s really excited about it, and she loves the idea of having my name on a little certificate.
So it’s a fun experience for them.
The only downside to the job is that I’m kind of on my own.
I’m doing this whole thing of flying, but it’s like, I don I’m just on my feet.
I mean, you can’t be on your feet.
It doesn’t work that way.
It just kind of sucks, because they’re so excited.
They’re like, this is going to get so much better.
You’re not going to notice a difference, but at the same time, they’re just really excited and they’re trying to get out there.
It helps that I have my daughter in my arms.
I love the fact that she’s the one who’s in charge of the plane.
[Laughs] She’s like the driver, so she kind of holds me accountable for what I’m up to and I kind of let her be the one in charge.
And she’s doing an awesome job.
I think the biggest challenge of this job is the piloting.
They have to have the ability to keep the plane flying at high altitude and have a good time, but they have to be able to fly and fly safely.
And the first time I flew the plane, it was a total nightmare.
I got on the plane and there was a big crack on the roof and I landed in a field, and the pilot came up and said, [screams] Get out of the way, you are not allowed to get on the aircraft, you will not be flying.
I was thinking, “What the hell is going on?”
So I just started screaming, and he was like [screeches], “Don’t go on the airplane!”
And he’s like [shouts] [scores of screams] Get on the fuselage!
It was just so bad, and they took off and it was so funny.
It was the first flight, and we were all laughing.
And then the next flight, we had a real panic attack and he just stopped me.
And he was just like, what are you doing?
And I’m like, no, he didn’t stop me, he just said, you need to get off.
So I got off, and this pilot who I have to talk to on the phone was like “I’m going to let you get off.”
And [he] just turned around and went, “No, you have to get up.”
So I had to get back on the air.
[He] said, I’m not going back, you’ve done a really good job, and that’s how I got back on.
And so, yeah, the job really is fun, and there’s definitely a lot of joy to be had.
I definitely got more involved in the business and have learned a lot from it, so it’s definitely been a rewarding experience.
