A new type of North American delivery service is being created, one that lets passengers pick up their own goods in their own vehicles, rather than buying from a freight company.
Sweetwater Express Delivery announced Thursday that it will start delivering the products in June 2017, with delivery from New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles already planned.
The company said the new model will allow for customers to pick up and drop off their own groceries in the comfort of their own home, while also having access to the best freight options available to the U.S. Sweetwater said it will pay for its own freight as it delivers its packages.
It said it expects the new service to cost $20-$25 per trip, which would be cheaper than traditional transportation options like taxis.
It said it plans to launch the service in Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Jose and Washington D.C.
The startup will also be adding the ability to pickup goods from a third-party warehouse, which Sweetwater has been trying to build in order to lower the cost of shipping.
It plans to offer the service to its first 300 customers in the coming weeks.
