KENYA, Kenya (AP) Kenya’s biggest-of-its-kind gas import, scheduled to start shipping next month, will increase its domestic gas consumption to help boost its economy, a government official said Tuesday.
The import will be the biggest export of gas to the country by a pipeline, the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.
The project is the latest effort by the government to boost domestic consumption and revive the economy, which is in recession.
Kenya has been grappling with a gas shortage for months, as the country imports about half of its gas needs.
The export of natural gas is an important part of the government’s strategy to diversify away from imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear fuel to build up a power supply that will power more than half of the population.
The country’s gas imports from Russia, Ukraine and China account for nearly a quarter of the country’s total gas imports.
It has the fourth-largest gas import bill in Africa after Angola, Nigeria and South Africa.
