Samsung is working on its next-generation flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S9, with a major unveiling planned in October.
The company is making its most significant smartphone announcement in more than a decade, with Samsung CEO and president JB Straubel saying the company is “coming closer and closer to the Galaxy X.”
“We are getting closer and close to the release of the Galaxy XX,” Strauble said during a conference call with analysts Wednesday.
“We’re starting to make some progress, and we’re starting [to] have some of the details.”
Straubel said Samsung’s new flagship phone will have a design that resembles the S9 and S9+ but is built on an “all-new core” of technology.
Samsung is making significant improvements to its camera and camera software, which will be powered by an all-new processor and software, and will offer a new display, Straubl said.
The Galaxy X, a smaller device that was released last year, was one of the first Galaxy devices that Straubal said would be unveiled at the Galaxy event in October, but he did not elaborate on what features Samsung was working on.
He did not provide details on what new hardware Samsung is using in the upcoming phone.
Strauble noted that Samsung will release the new flagship in a limited number of colors, starting with the gold-colored Galaxy S10.
The Galaxy S11, another gold-colored device, will be announced at the end of the year.
The company will also reveal a new smartphone design called the “X Plus,” a smaller, curved device that will have “a lot of design changes,” Strauabel said.
He added that the company has “some new hardware and software” for the next-level device, but didn’t provide specifics.
The new Galaxy phones will be “an upgrade to the S series,” Straabel added.
That is a reference to the first Samsung Galaxy phones, which were made in 2013 and 2015.
The announcement of the next Galaxy phone comes on the heels of Samsung’s announcement earlier this month that it would release its next smartphone in March.
Samsung previously teased a “new flagship” phone at the Samsung Media Summit in April.
